Princess Thyra of Denmark (1880–1945)

Thyra Louise Caroline Amalie Augusta Elisabeth of Denmark ( born March 14, 1880 in Copenhagen, † November 2, 1945 in Copenhagen) was a Danish princess of the House of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg- Glücksburg, a branch line of the House of Oldenburg, and members of the Danish Royal Family.

Life

Thyra of Denmark was the sixth child of the Danish King Frederick VIII (1843-1912) and his wife Louise of Sweden - Norway ( 1851-1926 ). It was named after her aunt Thyra of Denmark, who was by marriage Princess of Hanover. Princess Thyra grew up on the castles Charlottenlund and Amalienborg. Her brother Christian (X. ) succeeded his father on the Danish throne, her brother Charles was King Haakon VII of Norway.

1901 Princess Thyra had at the age of 21 years, a love affair with the young court physician Niels C. Ilsøe, which led to his immediate dismissal. Ilsøe then lived as a practicing physician in the west of Jutland, at the other end of the country, and remained unmarried. From his family it was reported that up to end of his life was a picture of Princess Thyra on his bedside table. Even Princess Thyra remained unmarried. It can therefore be assumed that the relationship was more than a passing infatuation. However, not befitting marriage was impossible at that time for a princess. Thyras younger sister Dagmar of Denmark in 1922 was allowed to marry beneath her, because the standards had eased over the years.

Thyra of Denmark lived their entire adult lives in an apartment in the Copenhagen Amaliagade, close to Amalienborg Palace. She was very kind and understanding, and her apartment was a popular destination for their siblings and the entire family. At the official court life played Princess Thyra no greater role.
