Principality of Salerno

The Principality of Salerno was one of the Lombard states in Italy, and among them one who was still last.

When Prince Sicard of Benevento 839 was murdered by Radelchis, where the citizens of the city of Salerno whose brother Siconulf prince. The succession war between Radelchis and Siconulf he could be terminated by Emperor Louis II in 851, which confirmed Siconulf as Prince of Salerno.

Robert Guiscard and Richard I of Capua besieged Salerno in 1076, until the city fell on 13 December. Prince Gisulf II submitted to them next year, so the last Lombard principality had been found in Italy to an end. Salerno was the capital of Guiscard duchy, which consisted of Apulia, Calabria and Sicily.

The title " Prince of Salerno" was re-assigned by King Charles I of Naples for his son, the future King Charles II ( 1254-1309 ).
