The Prionolepis ( Syn: Aspidopleurus ) is an extinct genus of fish belonging to the order Eidechsenfisch relatives ( Aulopiformes ) that lived in the Late Cretaceous.

Features

Prionolepis were medium-sized, approximately 20 cm long fishes of slender shape. The head was long and narrow. The dorsal fin was in before the middle of the body, in front of the pelvic fins. The caudal fin was forked. Characteristic are sawn, arranged in rows scales. Prionolepis means " Sägeschuppe ".

System

Prionolepis is assigned to both of Joseph Nelson and Charles Albert Frick Hinger 1969 prepared by Goody monotypic family Prionolepidae and together with the also extinct families Dercitidae and Ichthyotringidae the subordination Ichthyotringoidei within the Aulopiformes ( Eidechsenfisch relatives). Other scientists assign all Cretaceous lizards filefishes the subordination Enchodontoidei which is however not monophyletic.
