Professional sumo divisions#Jonokuchi

Jonokuchi (Japanese序ノ口, " something that has just started " ) is the sixth and lowest division in the Japanese sumo. The staff of the League will be provided primarily by beginners, but also descended from injuries older wrestlers who try to make a comeback. The first ranking of the new wrestler is determined at mae zumo, a competition in the first week of Basho, which is led by lower-ranking and often also new yobidashi and Gyoji. The number of aspirants is in each of about 15 to about 50, where it is highest at the spring tournament haru - basho in general. After several days of procedure they will be officially presented on the battlefield, what with large numbers of participants again can take several days. Then they are recognized as deshi ( apprentices).

The mandatory dress code for athletes of Jonokuchi Division consists of a cotton robe, the yukata and geta traditional wooden shoes.
