With only one reading it is taken from the Old Testament or the New Testament writings mentioned. At Easter time, both readings are taken from the New Testament.

Introit, Gradual, Alleluia or Tract, Sequence, Offertory and Communion are the parts that are traditionally sung by a schola, a choir or the congregation. You can also be replaced by hymns. These parts are the Proper Mass in the church musical sense. Most of the major classical musical settings ( orchestral masses ) of the Fair apply only to the Ordinary. An exception is the funeral Mass, the Requiem, with the setting of both the Ordinary and the Proper of. More recently, there are some Propriumsvertonungen.
