Propylene carbonate ( 4 -methyl-1 ,3- dioxolan- 2-one) is a clear, colorless, mobile, nearly odorless liquid. Carbonate as it is an ester of the dibasic carbonic, here with the divalent alcohol, 1,2- propanediol. It is used, inter alia, as the polar solvent, but is much more applications.

It is increasingly replacing ecologically and more precarious by the Occupational Safety cresols.

Production

Propylene carbonate formed as a by -product in the Polypropylencarbonatsynthese from propylene oxide and carbon dioxide. It can also be made of propylene glycol and urea Zinkeisenmischoxid catalyst.

Properties

Propylene carbonate has a high dipole moment resulting in suitability as a solvent.

Stereoisomerism

Propylene carbonate has a stereogenic center. Consequently, there are two stereoisomers, (R) - and (S )-4 -methyl-1 ,3-dioxolan- 2-one. And (S )-4 -methyl-1 ,3-dioxolan- 2-one used - usually is propylene in the art as a 1:1 mixture (racemate ) of (R). Enantioselective synthesis, however, are sometimes the pure enantiomers (R) - used, or (S )-4 -methyl-1 ,3-dioxolan- 2-one.

Use

  • Solvent, for example, in inks, paints, universal cleaners, Teerentfernern
  • Degreasing of metals
  • Extraction means for aromatic hydrocarbons
  • Electrolyte systems for electrochemical studies and electrodeposition of highly electropositive metals (eg, alkali metals, lanthanides ) and conductive polymers such as Polymethylthiophen ( electropolymerization )
  • Core sand binders in the foundry industry and as a swelling agent for specific clay minerals, eg in paints, cosmetics and lubricants
  • Intermediate in the chemical synthesis of organic / reactant
  • Plasticizers for plastics
