Protriptyline (trade name: Vivactil ®, Concordin ®) is a drug from the group of tricyclic antidepressants. It inhibits similarly strong as desipramine the resumption of the neurotransmitter noradrenaline, without having any appreciable sedative properties. Protriptyline also acts as FIASMA ( functional inhibitors of acid sphingomyelinase ).

The drug is its mechanism of action mentioned above particularly well suited for the treatment of depression with a distinct lack of drive. Treatment success can also ADHD, narcolepsy and chronic pain syndrome can be achieved.
Adverse effects (side effects)
When protriptyline include the following adverse effects are observed:
- Moderate to strong: effects on cardiac function
- Default: anticholinergic effects and epileptic seizures
- Low: low blood pressure ( hypotension) and weight gain
- Minimal: sedation
Dosage
The usual daily dose is between 15 and 40 mg doses, the extreme between 10 and 60 mg per day.
Pharmacological properties
The plasma elimination half -life of the drug is 54 bis 198 hours relatively long.
