Providence Painter

The Providence Painter is a painter of the Attic red-figure - style. He looked around the year 470 BC

The Providence Painter is considered to be students of the Berlin painter. He is regarded as a careful artist who is at the transition between the Archaic and Classical Art. It is difficult for him to bear archaic habits. He emphasizes archaic anatomy and robe schemes. Smaller stories he tells just some of the larger vessels, such as stamnoi and hydriai, where he represents groups of gods and mythical events. Mostly, however, he painted smaller image carrier such as Nolanische amphorae or lekythoi. A favorite motif are women who are being persecuted. There is a general train of women shown by him to be in a hurry. Details of his drawings as eyes, earrings, ankle or certain plant ornaments reminiscent of the Berlin painter. On several vases you will find the favorite inscription for a Glaucon. His Notnamen received the Providence Painter for a vase ( Namenvase ), which is located in Providence.
