History

The festival was founded in 1979 and is one of the oldest in the Nordic countries. In the first year it was a one day event, listened to about 4500 visitors music groups such as Son Seals Blues Band, Eppu Normaali and Tuomari Nurmio & Köyhien Ystävät in. Since then, the Provinssirock takes place every year in mid- June, a week before Juhannus on a river island in Törnävä, a district about four kilometers south of the center of Seinäjoki, instead. Originally opened in the Finnish festival summer until 2004, the Sauna Open Air was founded in Tampere.

The Provinssirock was expanded in the 1980s to a two-day festival, which in the years 1986 to 1988 had about 35,000 to 40,000 visitors. In the early 1990s, when Finland fell into a recession, the numbers fell sharply (eg 13,000 visitors in 1993), which led to a financial crisis for the organizers. The original organizer Kemu ry was replaced in 1992 by the successor company Selmu ry. From the mid- 1990s, it went up again, after which the event was finally day three. Starting in 2005, the festival had more visitors than the regular organizing city inhabitants. The current attendance record is 81,000 in 2011.
