Procumbent cherry (Prunus prostrata )

The low- lying Cherry ( Prunus prostrata ) is a species of the genus Prunus in the rose family ( Rosaceae ). It is native to the Mediterranean.

Description

The Procumbent cherry grows as a usually low -lying, spine loose shrub, reaching heights of growth from 20 to 100 centimeters ( raised to 150 centimeters). The small very short -stalked leaves are elliptical or egg-shaped and cut especially in the front half. The leaves are hand graufilzig or both sides bare.

The mostly single seated, hermaphroditic, with radial symmetry, five petals appear before the leaves. The five sepals are green. The five pink petals are about seven millimeters long. The red at maturity, ovate, slightly bitter stone fruit reached a diameter of 8 mm.

It flowers in spring; the main flowering is staggered on the altitude of the deposit and runs from April to June.

Occurrence

The Procumbent cherry is widespread in the northern Mediterranean from Spain to Lebanon, in the south of Morocco to Tunisia.

As the site of the limestone montane belt 1000-2400 m above sea level are preferred.
