Pruzhany

Pruzhany (White Russian Пружаны, Polish Pruzana ) is a city of about 20,000 inhabitants in the Breszkaja Woblasz in Belarus, 89 km north-east of Brest. Pruzhany is the administrative center of the Rajons Pruzhany. The city lies at the confluence of the river and the canal Mucha Wez.

History

Settlement of the area began about 8-9 thousand years ago. The first written mention of Pruzhany goes back to the year 1433. In the 16th century, one of the oldest Belarusian chronicles was found near the village Mahyljowtsy - " Bychower Chronicle ". The city was mentioned for the first time under the name Dobutschyn in 1473. In 1532 the city came under the rule of the Polish Queen Bona Sforza, who gave their coat of arms of the city. 1589 Pruzhany received the Magdeburg rights and city status.
