Psychrobacter

Psychorobacter is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria. The prefix Psychro - is derived from the Greek adjective, meaning psychros cold: Psychrobacter still growing at temperatures of 5 degrees Celsius.

Features

The types of Psychrobacter are rod-shaped or coccoid. They are salt tolerant ( halotolerant ) and still grow in environments with 6.5% NaCl. The oxidase test and catalase test positive. Oxygen is required ( aerobic). Metabolism is chemoheterotroph.

Locations include, without limitation the ocean, sea ice, the Antarctic Ocean, gills of fish and various foods. Thus, for example, the type Psychrobacter proteolyticus found in the stomach of Antarctic krill, Psychrobacter was glacincola isolated from Antarctic ice and Psychrobacter pacificensis was found in the deep sea.
