Public Domain Day

Public Domain Day ( German: Public Domain Day ) is a feast to the expiration of copyright, responsiveness of works in the public domain ( in German as Public Domain ). This legal change from protected by copyright works in the public domain is usually every year on January 1, depending on the length of the protection period rule each country.

The celebrations for the Public Domain Day were originally informally; the earliest known mention was made in 2004 by Wallace McLean ( a Canadian Public Domain activists ), the Lawrence Lessig joined as a supporter. Since 1 January 2010, lists a Public Domain Day website to the authors whose works pass into the public domain. There are around these days in several countries the activities of various organizations under the banner of the Public Domain Day.

Public Domain

The control term of protection for copyright is generally defined as the lifetime of the author plus a certain number of years after his death ( pma, latin postmortem auctoris ). In many local legal scopes ( jurisdictions ), this means that typically 70 years after the author's death must be passed. After this period, the author's works are fully available, so that everyone - without the need for previous authorization - access them and use them for any purpose. Legally happens on New Years Day (January 1 ). This means, for example, that went over in these countries works of authors around the world, who died in 1936 January 1, 2007 in the Public Domain.

Since public liberties vary depending on the jurisdiction, the transition of a work is not in the public domain worldwide. The most notable exception is the United States, will pass into the plants by 2019, no published automatically in the public domain. Australia's copyright law is even more restrictive; there is no Public Domain Day 2026 possible. Much of Europe will witness the transition of various works in the public domain, as well as Canada and New Zealand. Many other works would pass into the public domain, if not the rule protection period had been extended several times in recent decades.

The Public Domain Day 2010 tribute to the transition into the public domain in many countries for the works of authors such as Sigmund Freud, William Butler Yeats, Ford Madox Ford and Arthur Rackham. In 2011, among other things, the public domain of the works of Isaac Babel, Walter Benjamin, John Buchan, Mikhail Bulgakov, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Emma Goldman, Paul Klee, Selma Lagerlof, Leon Trotsky, Vito Volterra and Nathanael West was celebrated.
