The Boston Public Garden is a large, situated in the center of the city of Boston, Massachusetts in the United States city park right next to the Boston Common.

History

The park was established as the first botanical garden in the United States in 1837 by philanthropist Horace Gray, of commercially acquired the land against a lot of resistance from the city administration. In fact, he was only in 1856 the building permit.

In October 1859 Alderman Crane presented a detailed plan for the garden of the city administration, which approved it. Shortly thereafter, construction began on the property. In the same year the lake was completed in 1862 was the wrought iron perimeter fence will be completed. Today there are on the north side of the lake is a small island, but was originally a peninsula. The park was started in 1987 as a National Historic Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places.

Swan Boats

The swan boats used on the lake of the Public Garden is open, flat, pleasure boats where passengers may enter the lake from April to September. The operation of the Swan Boats, has existed since 1877 and has become over the years an important and nationally known part of the urban leisure activities. The original design of the boats was inspired by the opera Lohengrin and has been modified only slightly up today. The oldest still operating boat dating back to 1918, the most recent was built in 1995. It is driven by a single rider per muscle force over a pedal drive, which works similar to a conventional pedal boats.
