Public Suffix List

The Public Suffix List ( English, about list of public submissions ) is a well-maintained by the Mozilla Foundation list of all known TLDs under which Internet users can register their own domains. The list is used in the web browsers Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera, to limit the scope of HTTP cookies.

Content

The list includes all generic and country-code top -level domains, but also on the second or third level domains that are open to the public for registration of domains. For example, in the case of. Uk basically all second- level domains include (*. Uk) to me.uk and. Endings like. Co.uk cover. The list also includes some domain or web services that assign individual subdomain to their users, such as DynDNS or Blogspot.

Request an inclusion in the Public Suffix List should the respective registration authority for their domain endings themselves. Mozilla therefore not granted that the Public Suffix List will always be updated. So were in January 2013, for example., And post. Cw not registered, even though the endings were already actively used.

Use

The Public Suffix List is used to limit the scope of HTTP cookies. Accesses a Web browser on a website www.example.org, so the web server can set a cookie for the domain example.org. If the Web browser accept the cookie for org, then an attacker could set cookies that are sent as mozilla.org when visiting other websites. With the Public Suffix List Web browser cookies can be used for public domain extensions such as. Org or. Co.uk reject. Google Chrome also uses the list to determine if it is a domain name or a search for an entry in the address bar.
