Pucón

Pucón is a city in southern Chile in the Región de la Araucanía. It has around 14,000 inhabitants ( 2005) with the surrounding area.

Geography

Pucón is located about 110 km southeast of Temuco on the southern shore of Lake Villarrica. The Lago Villarrica has an area of ​​approximately 176 km ² and a maximum depth of 165 m. At the lake there are many beautiful beaches. He is the source of the River Toltén.

South of the city the active volcano Villarrica is with 2840m height.

The climate is that of Germany comparable. Especially in winter it rains a lot, snowfalls are rare.

History

1551 Pedro de Valdivia reached the area around Lago Villarrica. From 1597 again began massive attacks by the Mapuche in the area that had to be completely abandoned after 1602. The Spaniards retreated for a long time in the area.

On 27 February 1883, the war with the Mapuche has ended. The first settlers arrived around 1899 in the area of Pucón. Between 1920 and 1930 they began to build tourist hotels in Pucon.

In the strong earthquake of 22 May 1960, the Lago Villarrica overflowed its banks and destroyed many houses near the shore.

Attractions

In particular, the Lake Villarrica and Villarrica volcano attract many tourists. In addition, there are hot springs in the area.

To the east of the lake are two national parks, the National Park Villarrica and the National Park Huerquehue.

Economy

Tourism is the main source of income in Pucón. Fishing and forestry also play an important role.

Regular events

Every year here in January the Ironman 70.3 Pucón is discharged - a triathlon distances 1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.0975 km running.
