Puente Transbordador

The Puente Transbordador " Nicolás Avellaneda " (also Transbordador del Riachuelo ) is a transporter bridge that crosses the Riachuelo between Buenos Aires and Avellaneda.

History

On September 25, 1908, the Ferrocarril del Sud received approval to build a transporter bridge between the Isla Maciel and La Boca. This was inaugurated on 31 May 1914, and received the name of former Argentine President Nicolás Avellaneda. The gondola was 8 by 12 feet tall and could pedestrians, carts, cars and trams transport. The crossing was controlled by either a control position in the pod itself or by the machine house.

In the year 1940 100 m was further opened a new bridge, but the transporter bridge remained until the 1960s in operation.

By 1993, plans were announced to demolish the Transporter Bridge. By contrast, rose violent protest with the aim to preserve it as cultural-historical and technical monument. As a result, she was awarded in 1995 the status of a Sitio of Interest Cultural and in 1999 permanently protected by declaration to Monumento Histórico Nacional.

In January 2013 a general renovation of the Transporter Bridge with the aim to take them back into operation began. The work will take about a year and cost 17.8 million pesos.
