Puer natus in Bethlehem is a Latin church Christmas carol. It has been translated into numerous languages, in German it is known as a child born in Bethlehem.
History
The origin of this Gregorian chant is unknown. It is sung from the 13th century in worship on Christmas Day and Epiphany (January 6, Epiphany, Epiphany). At times, the verses were sung alternately in Latin ( choir) and German (municipality ) in the German, Danish and Swedish speaking countries, it is regarded as an early attempt of the vocal involvement of community members in the service.
The oldest known Latin text is from the early 14th century, the number of verses varies in the different records. A first German translation is by Heinrich von Laufenberg of the year in 1439. The best known German variant A child born in Bethlehem can be found in the hymnal of Valentin Bapst of 1545, it has 10 verses. Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), who in 1724 started this thread initially assumed in the cantata had they from Sheba shall come: Bach - Werke-Verzeichnis 65, later as an organ chorale in the " Little Organ Book ", BWV 603), added an additional verse one. Werner Neumann, however, suspected that the text written by Christian Weiß the Elder (1671-1737), pastor at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig comes

Today, the song is almost exclusively performed as an organ or choral works. In Protestant hymnal of the Evangelical Church in German-speaking, it is no longer listed. In ancient Gotteslob Puer natus in 1975 was in Bethlehem under No. 146 as a child of Bethlehem geborn published. In introduced on 1 Advent Sunday, 2013 new Gotteslob the song is no longer included.
