Pulchri Studio

Pulchri Studio, (Latin for: For zeal for the Beautiful ), is an association of artists from The Hague in the Netherlands.

The association has its seat since 1901 in a white, posh house on the Lange Voorhout 15 in The Hague. Are recorded and are interested in art ( Firm ) Members artistic working members (painters, sculptors and photographers ). For an artist one must first apply for membership, which is also foreign artists possible. The members are then selected from a range determined by the General Committee. An artist membership allows it to exhibit his own works in the galleries of the Company. Art lovers must be invited by other members. The Association leases its properties but also to non-members.

History

To the then lack of opportunities for self-development to oppose Pulchri Studio was established in 1847 as an attempt of some young artists. In Pulchri studio, the artists could entertain, work for models, exchange ideas, etc. A special role is played gatherings that as an art considerations ( Kunstbeschouwingen ) were called and the artists provided an opportunity to present their own work to the other members and with them auszustauschen.

Founding members of Pulchri were Lambertus Hardenberg, Willem Roelofs, Johan Hendrik Weiss break and Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove; Van Hove 1847 was also the first president of the Artists' Association. King William II took over the patronage. Soon after, John Bosboom, Jozef Israels, Hendrik Willem Mesdag, Jan Weiss break and some lesser known artists of the society joined. Later important members are further January Sluyters, Paul Citroen and Willy Sluiter. After the Second World War was Pulchri studio some time in disrepute: the club had in 1943 the command of the Nazis obey, to connect to the culture chamber (Willy Sluiter was dismissed as chairman ), which was generally regarded in art circles as a collaboration. Only in 1996 Queen Beatrix took the dignity of a patron of the club again.

Many painters, which are attributed to the Hague school today, dressed Board functions at Pulchri Studio and so made ​​this cooperative a bulwark of this school.: Bosboom was chairman from 1852 to 1853, Israels 1875-1878, Mesdag even from 1898 to 1907, but also Jacob and Willem Maris, Anton Mauve, Roelofs and white fracture were members of the board or commission members responsible for the drafting room, art considerations or to socialize meetings.
