Eruption of the Puyehue 9 June 2011
The Puyehue is a 2236 m high volcano in the southern Chilean Andes and is part of the Puyehue - Cordón Caulle volcanic complex. It is situated in the Región de Los Ríos, 20 km east of Lake Puyehue in the midst of 107 km2 Puyehue National Park.

The volcanic complex Puyehue - Cordón Caulle consists of the individual volcanoes Puyehue ( stratovolcano with summit caldera of 2.5 km in diameter ), Cordón Caulle ( ridge eruption columns ) and the Carran - Los Venados group ( cluster of about 70 craters, maars and small stratovolcanoes ), all along the Liquiñe - Ofqui fault zone ( a large horizontal displacement ) and accompanying side disturbances line up.
Most historical eruptions mountain range were collectively known as the Puyehue - eruptions, although the recent outbreaks in the Cordón Caulle area or around the Carran - Los held Venados group. Presumably, the eruptive center from the Puyehue - Cordón volcano shifted towards - Caulle group.
Eruption history
The recent eruption of the volcano in the area of Cordón Caulle began on June 4, 2011.
4 June 2011 3,500 people have been evacuated since an eruption of the volcano was imminent. It was observed up to 10 km high ash column. On June 5, violent eruptions shook the surrounding areas and a kilometer-long trench opened up in the earth's crust. Furthermore, large lava ejections were clearly visible and the ash cloud grew steadily. Even in a hundred kilometers east of the volcano located tourist city of Bariloche in Argentina blew ash and covered where whole areas with a layer of ash. Ranchers in the Argentine Pampa feared food shortages, as the ash was up to 50 cm high in the fields. In the lakes and rivers around the ash resulted in a fish kill. The volcanic eruption hinders the air traffic in large parts of South America. Again and again had to be canceled all flights to and from Buenos Aires as well as flights to Montevideo. Mid -June, the ash clouds of the Puyehue temporarily also to the failure of hundreds of flights across Australia and New Zealand. According to the Chilean Civil Aviation, the ash cloud was moving in an easterly direction once around the earth and returned from the west in the amount of Coyhaique, 1600 kilometers south of the capital Santiago, back. In Argentine Patagonia state of emergency was proclaimed in several provinces and preferred the winter school holidays. On 21 June, the ash cloud reached at a second circumnavigation of the earth, and Australia, and once again the failure of numerous flights.
