The Museum of Folk Architecture and customs of Ukraine, named after its location also Pirogovo Open-Air Museum is an open air museum in the southwestern Rajon Holosijiw the Ukrainian capital Kiev. It is an open-air folk museum and one of the largest in the world.

Foundation

The museum was founded in 1969 on the initiative of the Ukrainian Society for preservation by government decree as State Museum of Folk Architecture and customs of the Ukrainian Soviet Republic | established Ukrainian Soviet Republic. 1971, it was affiliated with the company. 1972 the museum to house the administration and as a custodian was assigned to the former church of the German Evangelical Lutheran congregation in Kiev, St. Catherine, which has previously been used by the Ministry of Culture as a storage for fuel and lubricants, and already was quite dilapidated. Due to the growing collection was the place in the depot building, the former German church, insufficient since the late 80s. Approximately 40,000 registered units camped there. But it was not until 1998 could be created and moved to spare.

Museum

The Museum now has a collection totaling more than 75,000 inventoried units and a 100 -acre outdoor area southwest of Kiev, which is modeled on an English landscape park. The rest of the museum infrastructure, the deposit and the administration are housed in building 19 of the Lavra in Kiev. Approximately 150 buildings ( according to other sources: 320) from the 16th to the 20th century were grouped in 25 regions of Ukraine to six ethnographic and geographic groups in the open area: Carpathian, Ukraine Corporation Piwdenna ( southern Ukraine ), Poltava Slobotschnschtschyna ( Sloboda ), Naddniprjanschtschyna ( area around upper Dnipro), Polisja ( Polesia ) and Podilja ( Podolia ). The buildings were translocated from their original locations in the Museum grounds. These groups are shown in their characteristic landscape and environment with barns, apiaries, wells, windmills and other objects of village life. The first groups were opened July 17, 1976, the other two followed. The oldest object is a farmhouse in block design and Polisja of 1587th In the three wooden churches church services and weddings are occasionally held.

Some of the buildings can be entered. They are decorated according to the historical equipment, household appliances, ceramics, furniture, woodwork and textiles, especially embroidery. A forge and a pottery provide insights into these crafts. The fields and gardens around the yards are maintained and managed by the women themselves as the supervisory working there. Often, they also wear the typical dress for the respective region.

On the spacious grounds there are a number of things to do, a simple restaurant with Ukrainian cuisine, various other food offers and the opportunity simply to make on one of the picnic meadows.
