Qanate Kurdo

Qanats Kurdo or Kanat Kalashevich Kurdoev, (* 1909 in the province of Kars, † 31 October 1985 in Leningrad) was a Kurdish writer, linguist and academic.

Life

He was born in the village Sûsiz in today's Turkish province of Kars. Back then Kars was part of the Russian Empire. Through the turmoil of the First World War, his family fled to Armenia in 1918 and from there to Tbilisi. He attended a Kurdish school in Tbilisi. Many famous Kurdish authors of the Soviet Union such as Dr. Çerkez Bakayev attended this school. In 1928 he went to Leningrad ( now St. Petersburg), to continue his studies. There he attended the Faculty of Language, History and Literature at the University of Leningrad. In 1941 he received his Ph.D. there. After the Second World War, he began to teach Kurdish Studies and Kurdish language at the Faculty of " Oriental studies ". 1959 Chair of Kurdish Studies was founded, whose head was from 1961 Kurdo. On 31 October 1985, he died in Leningrad.

Works

Qanats Kurdo wrote more than 100 monographs, books and articles on the Kurdish language, history and folklore. In addition, he trained more than 20 kurdologists.
