Quenelle (gesture)

The quenelle Greeting (French quenelle, a special type of dumpling ) is a gesture from France, in which a hand is placed on the other by straight arm. There are also other variants of the gesture.

The gesture was made famous by the French comedian Dieudonné Dieudonné. This is known for anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic positions and is considered a prominent representative of the far right. The gesture is represented by Dieudonné as a protest against the political establishment and expression considered by many performers as such. However, the gesture is shown in conjunction with right-wing extremist ideology, including the campaign of anti- sioniste M'Bala M'balas list for the European elections in 2009 or before the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin by his fellow Alain Soral. The gesture is therefore sometimes compared with the Nazi salute. So Moshe spoke Kantor, President of the European Jewish Congress that he saw a lesser known Nazi salute in the gesture.

Fame outside of France gained the greeting, as Nicolas Anelka showed him in December 2013 after a goal for his club West Bromwich Albion. As a result, Anelka was suspended by his club and later released. Previously other French athletes had (among other things Tony Parker, Teddy Riner, Nikola Karabatic, Yannick Noah, Samir Nasri and Mathieu Deplagne ) used the greeting. Also, the extreme-right politician Jean -Marie Le Pen and Bruno Gollnisch from the National Front have been photographed in the execution of the gesture.
