Quentin Bell

Quentin Claudian Stephen Bell ( born August 19, 1910 in London, † December 16, 1996 in Firle, Sussex ) was a British art historian, art critic, painter, ceramist and writer.

Life

Bell was the son of Clive Bell and Vanessa Bell, nee Stephen, and the nephew of Virginia Woolf. Bells biography of his famous aunt, Virginia Woolf: A Biography, two volumes ( London: Hogarth Press, 1972 ), not only won the " James Tait Black Memorial Prize ," but also the " Duff Cooper Prize" and the " Yorkshire Post Book of the Year Award ". He wrote several books about the Bloomsbury Group and Charleston Farmhouse. He taught art history at King's College, University of Durham (Newcastle University from 1963) 1952-1959. He was a professor at Leeds University. In 1964 he taught at Oxford University and in 1965 at Hull University. He was a professor of art history and theory at the University of Sussex From 1967 to 1975.

Bell was with ( Anne) Olivier Bell née Popham married. They had three children: Julian Bell, painter and art critic, Cressida Bell, a well-known textile designer and Virginia Bell, author of Among the Bohemians and Singled Out. His older brother was the poet Julian Bell. The writer Angelica Garnett was his half-sister. After the death of Leonard Woolf (1880-1969) Quentin Bell and Angelica Garnett Virginia Woolf inherited literary legacy.

Quentin Bell is buried in the cemetery of St. Peter 's Church, West Firle, East Sussex.
