Quest (1996 film)
Quest is a German puppet film from the year 1996. Considered one of the most successful short films. He was awarded the Oscar for best animated short film in 1996, the Cartoon d'Or 1996, and a further 40 international prices.
Action
The animated film tells the story of a sand people, in which he has wandered in search of water worlds of sand, paper, stone and iron, and master all kinds of threats and challenges. The life of the sand people begins in the desert, where he wakes up in the sand and goes in search of water. He hears the steady drop of water, but once it gets to the water body, the water dried up and he falls into a new world. The threat of the environment increases from level to level. The last is a company controlled by the machine world that itself consists of an aboveground and an underground part. Deep in the underground area, surrounded by menacing machines, the sand man sees through a rusty hole in the ground at last the longed wet. But before he can enlarge the hole in the floor to get to the water, he is crushed by the walls of a huge press. Ground to sand it flows through the small hole into the water down to the sandy bottom of the ocean where it is formed into a new body.
Production
Quest is a puppet film. The sand man was a 23 cm small figure made of latex foam with a movable skeleton made of brass. She was stuck in front of each setting with sand and screwed at every step along the backdrop. There were numerous scenes used. The largest measured 11 m² with a 24 m² large background for the painted sky. In addition to sand for the sand paper for the paper world and the world came as a building material, especially polystyrene for the stone world as well as wood, metal and plastic for the global iron used. All effects, such as sparks, flash welding light, flying leaves and falling stones, were produced directly on the camera, without digital image processing. Only the sound mix was done digitally with up to 32 stereo tracks.
The film was made at the Kassel Art Academy.
