Quirijn van Brekelenkam

Quiringh van Brekelenkam (* around 1620 probably in Zwammerdam in Leiden, † 1668 in Leiden, . Actually Quiringh Gerritsz van Brekelenkam ) was a Dutch genre painter.

Life

Little is known about the origin and formation of van Brekelenkam. Maybe he was a pupil of Gerard Dou, to whose work the early works have a big close up. During this time, van Brekelenkam mainly painted hermit and representations of the simple domestic life. Later he turned to then also refined interior scenes as well as market and sell scenes. In these works he is in the tradition of Gabriel Metsu, Gerard ter Borch and Jan Steen. Van Brekelenkam was co-founder of the Leiden Guild of St. Luke, which he joined in 1648.

He has a large number of genre pictures painted from the life of the people, of which around 170 have survived.
