Quthing ( pronunciation: ut ʰ in ), also Moyeni, is the capital of the district Quthing in Lesotho. The name comes from the Moyeni Phuthi and means place of the wind.

Geography

Quthing is the southernmost city of Lesotho. 2004, the city had about 15,000 inhabitants. Quthing consists of the two districts of Upper Moyeni ( with the administrative authorities of the district and the hospital ) and Lower Moyeni where the majority of residents Quthings lives.

Population and language

In Quthing live next Basotho numerous Phuthi who belong to a tribe that was expected only in the 19th century, the people of the Basotho. They speak Phuthi, a Nguni language ( Sesotho: Sephuthi ). In Quthing 2005 took a UNESCO -organized "Cultural Sephuthi - day " instead, in order to preserve the language from oblivion.

History

The city was founded as Quthing Moyeni. As district capital it had the previous Leloaleng and Alwynskop. 1884, the City Council was set up in Moyeni. Only with the introduction of postal addresses, the term Quthing prevailed. Actually, this is the name of a river and a Mission Station located 50 km to the south.
