R. Stephen Berry

R. Stephen Berry ( born 1931 in Denver, Colorado) is an American chemist and professor of physical chemistry.

Life and work

Berry studied at Harvard University, where he received his doctorate in 1956. From 1957 to 1960 he worked as a lecturer at the University of Michigan, then at Yale University as an Assistant Professor. Since 1964 he is professor at the University of Chicago, where he James Franck Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus until today, and Special Advisor to the Director for National Security at Argonne National Laboratory.

He was Managing Director of the United States National Academy of Sciences by 1999 to 2003. BlackBerry has received numerous prizes and awards, including Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Foreign Member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences, he received the Senior Scientist Award of the Alexander - von- Humboldt Foundation and the Newton - Abraham professor at Oxford University. In 1983 he was MacArthur Fellow.

The focus of his work is the study of the structure, the behavior and dynamics of clusters and biopolymers. He was also known for his work on the pseudorotation. Berry published about 500 scientific papers.
