Ragnar Hovland

Ragnar Hovland ( born April 15, 1952 in Bergen, Norway ) is a Norwegian writer, children's book author, translator and musician.

Life and work

Raised in Fusa and Luster, he attended high school ( vidergående skole ) in Stavanger and then studied at the University of Bergen Romance, English and Literature.

His debut novel Alltid fleire dagar appeared in 1979. Least since the publication of hovering over the waters (1982 ), he is considered one of the key authors of the Norwegian contemporary literature, especially the literature on Nynorsk.

Hovlands novels often play in his home Vestlandet and have numerous references to pop culture. Distinctive for its narrative style is the ambiguous fusion of seriousness and humor.

He is a translator of numerous children's books as well as plays and musicals. So he transferred, for example, works by Janosch, Erich Kästner, Christine Nöstlinger, Roald Dahl, Botho Strauss and Stephen Sondheim into Norwegian.

Musically, he is as a keyboardist and vocalist of the band Dei nye kapellanane have appeared.

Hovland is grandson of the bishop and Bible translator Ragnvald Indrebø.
