Rainer Burkard

Ernst Rainer Burkard (born 28 January 1943 in Graz) is an Austrian mathematician who deals with the discrete optimization and its applications.

Life

Rainer Burkard grew up in Graz and studied from 1962 mathematics and physics at the University of Graz and the University of Vienna. When Edmund Hlawka he wrote a thesis on the theory of uniform distribution of real number sequences and obtained his doctorate in 1967 at the University of Vienna. After that, he was an assistant at the Institute of Applied Mathematics, University of Graz, where he habilitated in 1971. After visiting scholar at the University of Cologne and Bonn University Burkard was appointed in 1973 to the chair of Applied Mathematics at the University of Cologne. In the following years he built one of the first German working groups to discrete optimization. In 1981, he Burkard a chair at the Technical University of Graz, where he took the tray mathematics from 1981 to 2011. From 1993-1996 Burkard was Dean of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Graz University of Technology. Since October 2011, Burkard is professor emeritus at the University of Graz.

Burkard deals with structural studies on combinatorial optimization problems and the development of efficient methods for solving these problems as well as problems of Operations Research. The results were published in several books and over 160 professional publications.

Work

Burkard is co-editor of a number of international journals. From 1986 to 1988 he was chairman of the Austrian Society of Operations Research ( ÖGOR ), from 1991 to 2000 a member of the Senate of the Christian Doppler Research Association, 1994-1998 Council Member of ECMI ( European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry). From 1995 to 1997, Burkard Vice President of IFORS (International Federation of Operational Research Societies ) and 2001-2002 Vice President of EURO, the European Association of Operations Research Societies.

Honors and Awards

Rainer Burkard received the 1972 Promotion Prize of the Austrian Mathematical Society. 1991 awarded him the Society for Mathematics, economics and operations research from science with their price. 1997 Burkard was awarded the EURO Gold Medal. 1998 Burkard was elected an honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
