Rakesh Sharma ( born January 13, 1949 in Patiala, Punjab ) is a former pilot and cosmonaut. He is the first Indian in space.
The pilot of the Indian Air Force was selected on 20 September 1982 the Indian Space Research Organization in consultation with the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center as an astronaut. In 1984, Sharma as a research cosmonaut member of the third visiting team from Salyut 7, to which he flew on Soyuz T-11. He returned on April 11, 1984 Soyuz T-10 back to Earth.
Rakesh Sharma 1987 left active military service and was first test pilot, then a senior test pilot at the Nashik division of Hindustan Aeronautics. In 1992 he went to the office of the Hindustan Aeronautics in Bangalore, where he was chief test pilot again. 2001 Sharma gave up the profession of test pilots.
Sharma is married and has two children.
