Rakitnica

The Rakitnica is a river in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, located south of Sarajevo. It rises in the northwest of the Treskavica mountains above the village Rakitnica in the municipality Trnovo. Behind the village Šabići begins an approximately 24 km long and up to 800 meters deep canyon, the traffic- technically undeveloped and is particularly popular with walkers and climbers. He is one of the deepest gorges of the Dinaric Alps.

The deep Rakitnica Canyon separates the massifs of Bjelašnica in the north and in the south Visočica each other. From the slopes of the ravine plunge down several small waterfalls. Larger inflows but there is no; the major portion of the inflowing water comes from small karst springs on the slopes of the canyon.

On the northern edge of the canyon are among other things the haunted by eco-tourists and day trippers mountain village Lukomir and which are under the protection of Stecci Blace and the small mountain lake Blatačko Lake.

The Rakitnica usually runs in a westerly to southwesterly direction. About seven miles from the mouth of the Neretva it turns south and then flows around the 884 m high rocky spur Oštro.

Several organizations, among others, in Konjic and Sarajevo, contact for obtaining a the originality of Rakitnica canyon and its protection against the construction of dams, roads and other infrastructure projects.
