Ralph Alessi

Ralph Alessi ( born March 5, 1963 in San Francisco ) is an American avant-garde jazz trumpeter.

Life

Alessi is the son of trumpeter Joseph Alessi, who also taught him the first, his mother Mary is a former singer with the Metropolitan Opera Company. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, studied from 1985 to 1990 at the California Institute for the Arts under Charlie Haden and James Newton and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts for jazz trumpet and a Master of Fine Arts for jazz bass from. As of 1991, Alessi has worked in the New York jazz scene, among others, Steve Coleman, Uri Caine and Ravi Coltrane, particularly on the albums of Coleman and Caine, he is often represented. He was also a member of Symphony Space Adventurer 's Orchestra by Don Byron.

In addition to his work as a musician Alessi began to teach himself, first at Five Towns College and the Eastman School of Music. Since 2002, he has taught as an adjunct professor at the jazz faculty at New York University. In addition, Alessi founder and director of the School for Improvisational Music that keeps in Brooklyn workshops on Improvvisierter music.

Alessi's brother Joseph Alessi Jr. is also a musician.
