Ramesh Shotham

Ramesh Shotham ( born May 7, 1948 in Madras) is an Indian percussionist and drummer of the World and fusion jazz.

Life and work

Shotham began after a zoology degree his career as a drummer for the rock band Indian Human Bondage. Mid-1970s, he studied in the Madras tavil, a spread in South India and Sri Lanka temple music drum and later at the Karnataka College of Percussion under the direction of the master TAS Mani classical percussion instruments Ghatam, Mridangam, Kanjira and Morsing. Since 1995 he is a member of Sigi Schwab's Percussion Project and the duo Mandala with Sigi Schwab. He worked with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and founded formations such as Bhavani ( with Mariano, Ara Dinkjian and Arto Tuncboyaciyan ) and Madras Special ( with Zoltán Lantos, violin, Christian Wroth, bass, Mike Herting, piano and Sandhya Sanjana, vocals), with whom he own compositions played.

In 1997, he appeared in Carla Bley's performance of Escalator over the Hill on the Musik Triennale Köln, 1998 Steve Coleman in India, and later at a world music festival with the oud player Mohammed Zinelabidin in Tunisia. He participated in the film Heartbeat of the Continents by Manfred Waffender, are presented in the various drum styles.

Between 2001 and 2004 he undertook with his group Madras Special tours of Holland, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and the UK. He is also touring with the quartet of the Karnataka College of Percussion. In addition, he is currently working with the WDR Big Band Cologne and Wolfgang Niedecken of BAP.
