Randfontein

Province

Randfontein is a gold mining town on the western Witwatersrand, West Rand District, Gauteng Province in South Africa. It is located about 45 kilometers west of Johannesburg. 2011, it had 80 492 inhabitants.

The recent history of the city begins with the discovery of gold in the late 1880s. The mining financier Sir Joseph Robinson acquired the territory in 1889 and established the Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company ( REGM ). In the following 100 years, the REGM played a significant role in the development of the city.

The mine soon developed into one of the deepest gold mines in the world. She had a length of 16 kilometers in north-south direction. In the 1930s she was the most profitable gold mine in South Africa.
