Rangifer (constellation)

The reindeer ( Rangifer Latin or tarandus ) is a constellation of the northern sky, which is not among the 88 of the International Astronomical Union ( IAU) recognized constellations.

Description

The reindeer is located in the northern constellation Cepheus official close to the Polaris ( α UMi 1.99 m), the main star of the constellation Ursa Minor, in the border area to the constellation giraffe. The reindeer only occupies a very small area in the sky, also it consists of only very faint stars. No star is brighter than 5.0m.

History

The constellation was introduced by Jérôme Lalande reindeer together with the also obsolete constellation harvest guardian ( custos Messium ) in 1775. There are two different Latinisierungen, therefore ( vel Latin for " or" ) is referred to as Rangifer tarandus vel.
