Rangitoto Channel

Geographical location

The Rangitoto Channel is one of several passages between the islands of the inner Hauraki Gulf near the mouth of the Waitemata Harbour to the east of Auckland in New Zealand. The canal gained its importance especially in that it is the only deep-water access to the port Auckland, which can be navigated by large container ships and cruise ships. It is also used by the ferry to Great Barrier Iceland.

The channel is located between the volcanic cone of Rangitoto Iceland in the southeast and the east coast of North Shore City in the north. The east coast has no settlements on the west coast are the East Coast Bays called suburbs of North Shore. At the south end of the channel the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park Reserve is located.
