Ras Sheehama

Ras Sheehama (* 1966 in Onakayale, Namibia; actually Omeho Yaaliyatala ) is a Namibian reggae musician.

Life

Ras Sheehama grew up in northern Namibia. His father's pro- SWAPO 's position in 1979 forced into exile in Angola and Zambia. There he began to sing and play guitar and was first introduced to the Rastafari and reggae culture in contact.

During his high school years 1984-1988 in Lagos ( Nigeria), he played in the school band. He was influenced by Nigerian artists like Fela Kuti. In 1986 he recorded his first demo. In 1988, he joined in Angola the Ndilimani Cultural Troupe.

In 1989 he returned to Namibia and went with Ndilimani in the context of the election campaign for the first free elections in 1990 on tour. In 1990 he began his solo career. He released three albums on Paul Joubert Music, which appeared only in Namibia as MCs. He has performed as the opening act for Manu Dibango, Salif Keïta, Ismaël Lô, Lucky Dube and Brenda Fassie and went with Music Circuit on tour in the UK.

1996 released his first CD album Ras Sheehama with Travelling. He won the NBC Music Makers Award, appeared on the French festival Printemps de Bourges and as the opening act for Ismaël Lô on Réunion. In 1997 he represented Namibia at the Expo in Portugal.

From 1997 to 2002 he made ​​recordings and performances with the band of Lucky Dube and Stimela. Making his first appearance in Germany in 1999 he had at the Africa Festival in Würzburg. In Johannesburg, he performed as the opening act for Don Carlos. He won a Sanlam Namibia Music Award and a Music Award.

From 2002 to 2005 he joined, among others, at the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Fêtes de Genève, at Canterbury University and on the TRNKOBRANÍ Open Air in the Czech Republic. In 2006, he won a Sanlam Music Award for Lifetime Achievement in Music.
