Red Hook is a village in Dutchess County, New York, United States. In the United States Census 2000, the city had 1805 inhabitants. It belongs to the Metropolitan Statistical Area Poughkeepsie - Newburgh - Middletown. The name is derived from the Dutch expression Roode Hoeck, which as much as red Peninsula means and alludes to the bright red color in the foliage in the fall.
The Village of Red Hook is within the Town of Red Hook on U.S. Highway 9, and is not to be confused with the district of Red Hook, Brooklyn.
History
The region was part of the Schuyler Patent. The St. Paul's ( Zion's ) Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Elmendorph Inn and the Halfway Diner, today Village Dinner are registered in the National Register of Historic Places.
Geography
Red Hooks geographical coordinates loud 42 ° 0 ' N, 73 ° 53' W41.994166666667 - 73.8775 ( 41.994315, -73.877552 ). The town is located on the Hudson River in Dutchess County.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.8 km ². This area consists exclusively of the country.
Demography
At the time of the census of 2000, there were Red Hook 1805 people. The population density was 645.3 people per km ². There were 798 housing units at an average 285.3 per km ². The population consisted of Red Hooks 95.46 % White, 0.66 % African American, 0.06 % Native American, 1.72 % Asian, 0.06 % Pacific Islander, 1.11 % reported other to belong to races and 0.94 % from two or more races. 3.55 % of the population to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The residents of Red Hook distributed to 765 households out of which 29.4 % were living in children under 18 years. 49.3 % married couples living together, 10.6 % had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7 % were non-families. 28.8 % of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 11.8 % of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size is 2.92 people.
The population was spread out with 23.2 % under the, 9.1 % 18 -24- year-old, 28.0 % 25 -44- year-old, 22.8 % 45-64 year olds and 16.8 % under the age of 65 years or more. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 98.1 males. In the over -18s accounted for 100 women, 90.6 men.
