Red Rock Island

Red Rock Iceland is an uninhabited, 2.3 -acre island in the bay of San Francisco, south of the Richmond - San Rafael Bridge. It is the only island in the bay in private ownership. It measures 230 meters from north to south, from east to west 150 meters and is 52 meters high. On the high rock the borders of three counties converge: San Francisco, Marin County and Contra Costa County.

The island had frequent changes in ownership since the 1920s, and was sold in 1964 for $ 49,500. In the 1980s there were plans for removal of the upper half of the island for the purpose of development with a hotel that were not implemented.

In 2001, a consortium planned as part of compensation for an oil spill to buy the island to protect the birds. Even that did not happen. Currently, the owner is trying to sell the island with an asking price of 22 million dollars.
