Editorial ( Latin: redigere, " return / propel, bring to a state " ) is the sum of the editors of a media operation, their office, and their activities, editing. An editorial team has the task of bringing information into a publishable version. The editorial is the department in a newspaper or magazine publisher, which furnishes the journalistic work. It can be composed of multiple specialized divisions ( departments ). Then the Conference of Editors is also called " the editors ".

The term is also used for editing the actual (possibly multi-level ) process of creating articles. This also heard the term final editing.

" An editorial review" ( as opposed to " write a PR " ) or " this editorial will appear in the next issue ": In industry jargon of advertising agencies and magazines display the term editing is needed, in contrast to this importance also for editorial texts.

Construction of an editorial

An editorial is usually headed by a chief editor and is organized into thematic departments, with newspapers in the five classical departments of politics, business, sports, feature / culture and local news as well as other departments such as service, media or travel departments. A department works on a certain subject area, as well as rubrics, for which it is responsible and independent of the other departments. Often the individual subject areas are divided among the editors, depending upon qualifications and knowledge of the editors within a department. The Ministry of Cultural Affairs, which is also known as feuilleton, edited as an editor, the book reviews, another writes about exhibitions, the third about new movies. Another way of division is the division according to journalistic forms, forms of text. An editor specializing in comments, another rather on background reports or reports.

In many newsrooms, a managing editor ( managing editor ) is responsible for the coordination of printing, advertising department, schedules, and weekend service. He represents the interface between the editorial and production

In one or for an editorial review editors, overallists, free journalists and volunteers, sometimes also external experts.

Overallists provide the editors for a monthly lump sum to a specific subject area or topic enduring contributions. Freelance journalists working for a line fee. In addition, an editorial team works with correspondents. They are responsible for a particular area or country in the rule and make the connection to the newsroom. Often correspondents work simultaneously with several editors.

Workflow in an editorial

Editorial meetings are regularly called together daily in newspapers in order to coordinate the different departments and thus no overlap in the topics. In addition, here the focus and at the same time, the scope of the next issue be fixed. Frequently finds the so-called "leaf criticism " instead, in which the output of the previous day is discussed. Both misspellings and substantive shortcomings or unfavorable layout come here for discussion. The managing editor assumes the definition for the next edition and also some noted all this in a side mirror, which today is usually created digitally. It is often taken jointly select the picture in a separate screen conference with image editors, graphic designers, department heads and the chief editor.

Today, the resort boundaries dissolve rapidly on. Modern Newsroom Management works across all departments. In the center of modern newsrooms, there is joint Newsdesk, in which converge the news. Some editors are now using for the first- line principle. A portion of the contributions will be published online in advance.

The editor evaluates and selects appropriate messages. From freelance journalists filed articles he checked for factual accuracy, improved style, spelling and grammar errors, shortens or lengthens them and bring them into the respective medium standard format. Editors are responsible for researching and texts of the editorial content of a medium. They also edit the article freelancer.

In smaller newsrooms, the editor selects the images and teaser for yourself. Larger magazines or newspapers often have their own image editors, who selects photos to the articles from databases or are at freelance photographers in order.

The daily schedule of daily newspapers: First, current events and the accompanying materials are sorted, then discussed at the editorial meeting and selected. Now begins the further research, writing or editing of foreign contributions, mostly from news agencies, freelancers or correspondents. The finished articles are still in the editorial system.

Before articles go to print, they go through as far as possible the proofreading, but in any case the final editing. There, the responsible editor checked it again for errors and stylistic shortcomings, fixes bugs or returns the item to return to the editor.

The final editing checked out just before the imprimatur of the layout of the pages and articles, the page numbers, and whether the products are all in the correct categories and all texts were released. In an editorial there is often time pressure, especially in newspapers, because the content and layout must stand up to the date of printing, so that the delivery will be delayed.

There used to be almost exclusively editorial offices who wrote and produced all posts for their publication himself. Today the trend, especially in local and regional newspapers, for cost reasons to cloak editorial goes.

In German editors, an editor does all the activities of the research to the print-ready products in the U.S. and in the UK a distinction is made between a " reporter" and an "editor". One of researching and writing, the layout has other, formulated to, edited and looks after the deadlines.

Tendenzschutz and Internal Press Freedom

Under tendency protection means the right of the owner or publisher of a medium ( eg, a newspaper),

  • To determine the general political, economic and cultural orientation of the press organ ( Transfer Law),
  • Define editors in employment contracts and it
  • To dismiss the editor in chief of disagreements.

The tendency protection has some issues, like Paul Sethe in "The Month " (1965) and "The World " (1995) reported: There it states, " Freedom of the press is the freedom of two hundred rich people to spread their opinion, journalists who share this opinion, they always find. [ ... ] Free is the one who is rich. " To regulate the competences among themselves and to define substantive and procedural standards, editorial statutes were agreed in many newsrooms.

As an interior freedom of the press, the independence of an editorial is referred to its own publisher. This means in particular that an editorial can also rely on an editorial statute must, if possible publication interests of the publisher contrary.

Online editors

Since the mid- 90s emerged alongside the traditional newsrooms online newsrooms. Meanwhile, many editors are working across media. Each national newspaper and probably all regional newspapers have an Internet portal. But be either edited the article in the current issue or there is a separate online editorial who writes exclusively for the Internet portal posts / articles.

The web presence must be constantly updated, articles need to be adapted, the latest news and events are continuously adjusted. In online journalism texts must be linked. Relatively short texts are considered to be ' standard '. Online editors must have more computer skills and Internet skills as a classical editors.

An example of this way of working offered on September 11, 2001, Spiegel Online staff.

Special Tasks

Larger houses divide editorial departments in topics ( eg parliamentary editors ) and functions (eg text editors, image editors, editorial appointment, etc.).
