Reinis Kaudzīte

Reinis Kaudzīte (* May 12 1839 Commune Vecpiebalga, Governorate of Livonia, † August 21 1920 Commune Vecpiebalga ) was a Latvian teacher and writer.

Life

He was from 1867 teacher at the local community school. In various writings, he turned against the cultural dominance of the German Baltic pastors. Under the influence of Jean -Jacques Rousseau, he published about 900 aphorisms. He has also written several textbooks and together with his brother Matīss Mērnieku laiki, the first realistic novel in Latvian.

Reinis Kaudzīte was repeatedly elected community leaders. From 1904 he lived in different places and moved in 1913 with Charlene Damrozi after Neubad. In 1920 he again lived at Matīss Kaudzīte, where he died.

The house of the brothers Kaudzīte in 1929 to a museum, the first of its kind in Latvia, remodeled. The novel " Mērnieku laiki " was released in 1883 partly in German translation ( complete edition 2012).
