Renea bourguignatiana

Renea bourguignatiana is a living on the land snail from the family of Mulmnadeln ( Aciculidae ) in order Architaenioglossa ("old Bandzüngler "). The distribution area is limited to a very small area at Menton in the Alpes- Maritimes and Ventimiglia (Liguria ) on the French- Italian border.

Features

The (adult ) case measures 3.3 to 3.8 mm in height and 1.0 to 1.05 mm in width. It is cylindrical - fusiform with 7 ¼ to 8 moderately to weakly convex whorls. The last three turns are approximately the same width, the last turn is significantly flattened. The Protokonch with 1 ¾ is smooth, then put a fine ribs. Even the penultimate whorl there are 54 to 64 ribs. The mouth is U-shaped in frontal view and comparatively narrow. Similar Species

Renea moutonii similar but Renea bourguignatiana is taller, slimmer and has a narrower mouth edge. In Renea paillona the mouth in the frontal view is broader and the muzzle lip is not so much thickened.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species was originally described from Pleistocene or postglacial deposits in the Gorge de St. Louis in Menton ( Alpes -Maritimes, France). Only about 10 km northeast of the type locality in 1977 were more specimens have been found. Also in 1977 live animals were found at Ventimiglia ( Imperia province, Italy) then.

The species lives in mesophilic forests with European hop hornbeam ( Ostrya carpinifolia ), downy oak (Quercus pubescens) and holm oak (Quercus ilex) in the moist leaf litter.

Taxonomy

The taxon was described in 1880 by Geoffrey Nevill first time. It is the type species of the genus Renea Nevill, 1880. Locus typicus The is the Gorge de St. Louis in Menton ( Alpes -Maritimes, France).
