Republic Steel

Republic Steel was once the third largest steel producer in the United States.

Republic Steel was founded in 1899 as the "Republic Iron and Steel Company " in Youngstown, Ohio.

Cyrus Eaton acquired several smaller steel producers, which in 1927 merged with Republic Steel, with the aim to become large enough to challenge U.S. Steel. Eaton bought steel locations added in Canton, Warren, Massilon and Elyria. The Great Depression of 1929 threw him back, but in 1930 renamed Republic Steel Corporation was the third largest steel producer in the United States according to U.S. Steel and Bethlehem Steel, thanks to the management of Tom Girdler, a former manager of Jones and Laughlin. Its head office was in Cleveland, Ohio.

Republic Steel was known in particular during the 1930s for his rabid anti-union policies, as it was documented in the documentary " Republic Steel Strike Riot Newsreel Footage ". With the outbreak of World War II, were offered as a massive defense contracts, the conditions improved gradually.

Until the 1970s, Republic Steel remained profitable, as rising imports, increasing labor costs, increasing environmental constraints and other problems for Republic and its American competitors posed serious challenges. 1984 Republic Steel merged with Jones and Laughlin Steel, a subsidiary of Ling- Temco - Vought Inc.. The entire group has now merged under the new name LTV Corporation.

In December 2001, LTV sought Chapter 11 and was adopted a few months later by the International Steel Group Inc., for Mittal Steel Company NV heard.
