Retrophyllum comptonii in New Caledonia
Retrophyllum is a genus of five species in the family of Podocarpus plants ( Podocarpaceae ). Christopher Nigel Page has these five species in 1989 spun off from the previously heterogeneous ( polyphyletic ) Genre Nageia.
Description
There are shrubs or trees. The leaves are needle-like, but lanceolate; they are tough and leathery.
These species are dioecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( dioecious ). The seeds are surrounded by a seed coat ( aril ).
Dissemination
The genus has Retrophyllum in the Southern Hemisphere many mutually isolated habitats ( disjoint areas ). It comes in both New Caledonia and Melanesia, as well as in Brazil, Venezuela and Colombia ( for more details refer to the individual species).
System
In the genre of Retrophyllum there are five types:
- Retrophyllum comptonii (J. Buchholz) C.N. Page, Origin: New Caledonia.
- Retrophyllum minor ( Carrière ) C.N. Page, the deposits are located on basic rocks in the southern part of New Caledonia.
- Retrophyllum piresii ( Silba ) C.N. Page, home is the Brazilian state of Rondônia ( Serra Pacas Novos ).
- Retrophyllum rospigliosii ( Pilg. ) C.N. Page, Origin: Western Venezuela, Columbia and eastern central Peru.
- Retrophyllum vitiense ( Seem. ) C.N. Page, home is Melanesia: Moluccas, New Guinea, Bismarck Archipelago, Santa Cruz Islands, Fiji Islands.
