The new-found friend is a British-French - German feature film from the year 1989. The screenplay was written by Harold Pinter, based on the short story The new-found friend of Fred Uhlman, mainly around the year 1933 at the time of the so-called " seizure of power" plays in Germany.

Action

Five decades after his emigration is U.S. attorney Henry Strauss ( Jason Robards ) for the first time in his native city back. He was then called, Hans Strauss ( Christien Anholt ), and I come from a Jewish doctor's family. Full of nostalgia he remembers his former friendship with the also 16 -year-old classmate Conrad of Lohenburg ( Sam West), who comes from a long line of noble family. In many flashbacks, we see 1932/1933 the deep and intimate friendship of the two boys from different family backgrounds. Both rave about the poet Hölderlin, discuss Shakespeare and Freud, make joint excursions in the surroundings of Stuttgart, and will eventually be overtaken by political events in 1933. The subliminal conflict begins when Hans noticed that Conradin invites him only to his home if his parents are not there. During a visit to the opera it comes to a scandal: Konrad, accompanied by his parents, Hans denied. This is deeply hurt. Konrad apologized to him and explained the reason: His parents have both an anti-Semitic attitude and reject his friendship with a Jewish boy from. Also Conradin itself is inspired by Hitler and dreams of a renewed Germany. After Hitler came to power, the couple decides Strauss that Hans should emigrate to relatives in America because of the now open outcropping anti-Semitism in Germany. In Stuttgart the present time Henry Strauss experiences in the conduct of his old high school the headmaster, what has become of Konrad: He was involved in the assassination attempt on Hitler in 1944 and was executed as a resistance fighter.

Background

Model for the figure of Konrad von Lohenburg (in the book: Conradin von Hohenfels ) is Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg, who attended the same traditional Stuttgart High School, on the Fred Uhlman went.

Award

Director Jerry Schatzberg was nominated in 1989 for his work for the Golden Palm.
