Rewley Abbey ( Regalis locus ) is a former Cistercian abbey and about 500 meters northwest of the center of Oxford in England.

History

The monastery was founded around the year 1272 as " studies " as a sister monastery of Thame Abbey by Richard of Cornwall and in 1281 raised at the instance of Edward, the Earl of Cornwall, son of Richard, to the abbey, and was the preparatory course of the Cistercians at the University of Oxford. Thus, it belonged to the filiation of Citeaux. Before 1398 it lost its importance as a preparatory course, but continued to exist as an abbey. As a new study College 1437 St. Bernard 's College (now St. John's) was founded. 1535 the annual income of Rewley was estimated at 174 pounds. 1536, the monastery was dissolved and left Dr. George Owen.

Buildings and plant

Little is known about the monastery buildings. The refectory was, however, obtained as Mälzhaus to the 18th century. The last remnants were removed except for a part of the wall with the passage in 1850 for railway purposes. This passage is visible from the canal path north of Hythe Bridge from.
