Rías Altas

The Rías Altas ( "Upper Rias " ) are fjord-like bays on the Atlantic coast in the north of the northwestern Spanish region of Galicia. Originating they are from flooded river valleys. The coast is characterized by rocky cliffs, between which there are numerous small beach coves.

Location

The Rías Altas occupy the entire coast of the province of Lugo and the northern part of the coast of the province of A Coruña. The eastern end is the Ría de Ribadeo on the border between Galicia and Asturias, the westernmost bay, is the Ría del Burgo at A Coruña. Chance also the south-west subsequent Costa da Morte is counted in the Rías Altas zone.

The Rías

The largest of the Rías Altas are from east to west:

  • Ria de Vivero ( Lugo province all )
  • Ria del Barquero (border of the provinces of Lugo and A Coruña)
  • Ría de Ortiguera
  • Ría de Cedeira
  • Ría de Ferrol
  • Ría de Ares
  • Ría de Betanzos
  • Ría de Coruña ( A Coruña Province all )

Between the Rías do Barquero and de Ortiguera lies with the cape Estaca de Bares the northernmost point of Spain and the Iberian Peninsula. The main ports in the Rías Altas, A Coruña and Ferrol.
