Richard Caton Woodville

Richard Caton Woodville (* 1825 in Baltimore, † 1855 or 1856 in England) was an American painter.

Life

Woodville, who came from a rich family, lived until 1845 in Baltimore. From 1842 on, he studied at the University of Maryland Medicine, but drew even at that time, and painted it. Maybe he was already a picturesque training at St. Mary 's College at Samuel Smith, Joseph Hewitt, or even at Alfred Jacob Miller. In 1845 he went to Dusseldorf, where he studied as a private student Karl Ferdinand son after a brief visit to the Art Academy until approximately 1851. There Woodville was particularly inspired by the genre painting by Johann Peter Hasenclever and its preference for typing by caricature. During the Düsseldorf study years he sent several paintings in the United States. From 1851 he held mainly to France and England. He died at a young age from an overdose of morphine.

Works

Works Woodvilles are owned by the Maryland Historical Society and the Walters Art Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and in numerous other public collections.

Woodville often painted images with social and political terms, and genre pieces that were sought after by collectors even during his lifetime. He is not to be confused with Richard Caton Woodville Jr. (1856-1927), his son, who painted battle scenes especially.
