Richard Chandler

Richard Chandler [ tʃɑ ndlə ː ] (* 1738 in Elson, Hampshire, † February 9, 1810 in Tilehurst, Berkshire ) was a British classical archaeologist.

Life

Chandler visited only the Winchester College and later moved to the Oxford University. There he first studied at Queen's College, and later at Magdalen College. At the latter he became a Fellow and explored, inter alia, the antique collection of Thomas Howard, 21st Earl of Arundel. He led this John Selden further research and on the basis of its " Marmora Arundelliana " Chandler could be 1763 " Marmora Oxoniensia " publish.

On behalf of the Dilettanti Societät Chandler traveled 1764 Ionia, Attica, Argolis and Elis. On this expedition he was accompanied by the architect Nicholas Revett (1720-1804) and the painter William Pars ( 1742-1782 ). 1766 returned to the group with a rich yield back to England.
